Alpha Adulation Part 2

Ralph Fiennes as Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights

When we’re talking alpha in erotic romance we’re talking dominant, top dog, man on top. Depending on the story, he’s the one with the whip or the keys to cuffs, the one steering that ship of seduction into the harbor of satisfaction.

In my stories, alphas come in all shapes, though not all sizes. My alphas may not always be dark, they may not always be handsome, but they are almost always tall – big enough to dominate physically as well as psychologically. Alphas can be sociable charmers or lone wolves. They can be CEOs, rock-stars, plumbers, pirates or lords of fiefdoms. They can be anything you can imagine, but they are always in charge.

Sure, sometimes they let other people tell them what to do. Like Sebastian, the top dog in my newly released erotic romance novel, Please. He’s an actor, so he’s got to listen to his director right? But he does it with a wink and a nod, like he’s humoring him. The director may be telling Sebastian what to do, but we know who the boss is, and it sure ain’t the little dude behind the camera.

The defining characteristic of an alpha male is that they are in control. Always. Emotionally. Physically. Psychologically. And of course, sexually.

We may be strong women who know what we want and how to get it. We may be alphas in our own rights, dominating in the boardroom or the operating theater or on the stage. We may be queens of our own realms, literally. But when it comes to the bedroom, the alpha male puts us in our place with a firm hand and a soft whisper. And that’s why we love them.

In tomorrow’s post, my Top 5 Top Dogs from classic literature!
